*Important and Helpful Bit Torrent Information:

 

Bit Torrent (BT) is the key to making information easily and cheaply available to the masses. BT downloads save tremendously on bandwidth and allow me to serve these files to thousands more. If you don't have Bit Torrent - please consider downloading and installing my preferred torrent program. This program uses so little CPU resources that you might not even notice that it is installed and on. And it's even better when you have it "tweaked" for your computer and internet set-up. Please note that most of you will probably want to choose the full installation program; and hey, please, keep your client open after installing and downloading and help seed these files (at least) until we stop this insanity in 2008. I'm not kidding. Please help seed these files.

 

Setting Up and Tweaking Utorrent:

 

Experiment with the global maximum upload rate. Try different settings of approximately 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 and 4/5 or more (more is better for the community) of your available upload bandwidth. {If you don't know what your upload bandwidth speed is, contact your ISP.)

 

My Setup: I have a home network using Charter Cable High Speed Internet with 3mb downstream/256k upstream. When I set my global maximum upload bandwidth rate to 12kbs, my children (and me too) can play World of Warcraft with no noticeable change in speed. And when I am the only one on the network, I can set my upload to 20kbs and surf the net with no significant change in surfing speed.  Lastly, when everyone is asleep, at work, or at school, I often change the setting to "Unlimited" to allow utorrent to seed at the maximum rate possible. {Update: I now have 5mb downstream and 512k upstream.}

Important Notes:

  • I sometimes forget to change the upload rate back to 12kbs - so I taught my wife and children how to lower/change the setting. If I didn't, I'd often have an annoyed wife and angry children waiting for me when I returned home from work. {This means they also know how to raise it as well. ;-)}

  • I have never tried this on dial-up, but I seem to recall reading that many dial-up users have a 32kbs upload speed. Someone email me and let me know if this is correct and what works best for you. 

  • I never turn off the computer (except for upgrades and maintenance) that I use to seed my torrents. And to conserve energy, I have the screen saver set to go to a blank screen. Alternatively, you can turn the monitor off. Please note that leaving the computer on all the time actually saves "wear & tear" on many parts - and well...not long ago there was a fierce debate on the internet about whether it's better to turn off your computer or to leave it on. However, that's way too much controversy for me to get into, so please do whatever you think is best for your situation.

Additional Recommendations:

  • Go to Options/Preferences/General and check/set it to start utorrent on system start-up and to minimize to system tray.

  • Go to Options/Preferences/Connection and set the Global Maximum Download Rate to 10% of your maximum download speed. And while you're there, examine the other settings as well.

  • Consider using PeerGuardian 2. This is a great program and it uses very little cpu processing time.
